We decided to hike Tumbledown Mountain—a trail I knew well from my youth.  Back then, I spent summers at Camp Lawroweld in Weld, Maine, on beautiful Webb Lake, and Tumbledown was practically part of camp life.

This time, we checked the forecast before heading out: rain by 1PM.  But inclement weather doesn’t stop the Mainer Montanan or the Wild Woman. We were going.

On the way, we swung through Farmington and grabbed bagels at Java Joe’s Corner Café—fuel for the climb.

We chose the Brook Trail, which starts off easy, moves to moderate, and finishes with a strenuous scramble near the summit.

At first, the west peak rewarded us with a view of Tumbledown Pond but the fog rolled in quickly, and within 30 minutes we were fogged in.

Then the skies opened.

Next time, I think we’ll do the classic route: Loop Trail up, Brook Trail down.  It’s a favorite for good reason.

By the time we reached the car, we were soaked, but spirits were high.  We capped the day with beer, wine, and takeout pizza from Brickyard Hollow in Freeport.

A nearly perfect Maine adventure day.
